Faculty of Computer Science, Bialystok University of Technology invites you to celebrate International Pi Day together

02-03-2022

Lectures for primary and secondary school students, workshops for all those who love logic games and mathematics, as well as a team competition – this is how the Faculty of Computer Science of Bialystok University of Technology invites you to celebrate the International Pi Day together.

The International Day of the Number π is celebrated every year on 14 March. The date was chosen not accidentally – 3.14 is the beginning of the value of this mathematical constant. Interestingly, it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein and an outstanding Polish mathematician, Władysław Sierpiński. Since 2020, following the proclamation of UNESCO, 14 March is the International Day of Mathematics.

What is so special about the π number that it has aroused the interest of mathematicians, scientists and even pop culture for thousands of years? Some say that looking for patterns in its successive decimal places may be a way to find out whether our world is governed by mathematical rules. In 2002, scientists in Japan set the task of calculating the number π to the mighty Hitachi SR 8000 computer. The machine reached 1.24 trillion decimal places!

Unusual values of the number π, its wide application, as well as many other interesting facts from the world of mathematics will be presented during the event organised by the Faculty of Computer Science of Bialystok University of Technology.

Primary and secondary school students, as well as all maths enthusiasts are invited to celebrate the event. There are many events in the programme of Pi Day, so everyone will find something interesting for themselves. The first lectures are scheduled for 8.15 am.

Open links to lectures delivered on MS Teams by lecturers and students of the Faculty of Computer Science will be made available just before the event on the website: pi.wi.pb.edu.pl
In addition, the organizers propose an offline competition “Pi-challenge”. The task for student teams will be to document the experiment used to measure π. You are invited to register by 13 March. Rules of the competition and instructions for registration are available on the website: Rules of the Pi challenge competition.
You are invited to the International Day of Mathematics and the Pi Day by: Faculty of Computer Science of Bialystok University of Technology, Math4You Research Circle, Logical Games Research Circle, Signum Centre for the Popularisation of Mathematics, Bialystok Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society. The organisers are also supported by: Bialystok Branch of the Polish Informatics Society, EY and Sii.
