European Cross-Border Doctorials Certificate Awarding Ceremony

The European Cross-Border Doctorials summer school is a cyclical event bringing together universities from across Europe. It is organised by the Languedoc-Roussillon Doctoral College from France. Each participating university chose eight students and two tutors to supervise the work of international and interdisciplinary teams. Bialystok University of Technology also chose its PhD students and supervisors, Assoc. Prof. Ewa Glińska, PhD and Anna Kononiuk, PhD, who represented the Faculty of Engineering Management.
“The very idea of the European Cross-Border Doctorials summer school came along last autumn in the Univers consortium which was created to carry out various international activities together with universities from all over Europe. Originally, we intended to organise a stationary summer school for PhD students but because of the pandemic we have decided that it would be held online,” explained the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Assoc. Prof. Dorota Anna Krawczyk, DSc, PhD, Eng.
Despite the remote collaboration, participants benefited a lot from the summer school which lasted from 5 to 10 July. Moreover, the European Cross-Border Doctorials organised a competition, in addition to lectures and workshops, in which as many as three teams represented by our PhD students were awarded.
“The students from our university did very well by being in the first, second and third team. We are very proud of them. Without a doubt, the participation in the international summer school allowed our PhD students to improve their qualifications and competencies, including their soft skills, language skills, cooperation skills in international teams and online cooperation skills. Working on such team projects is easier and more enjoyable if done together in a classroom rather than online. However, the students managed to do very well regardless of the setting. I hope that this was not only an interesting short-term initiative for them but that it will translate into their work on their PhD theses and further professional work,” added the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Assoc. Prof. Dorota Anna Krawczyk, DSc, PhD, Eng.
The tutors, who provided substantive support to the participants, also confirm the positive aspects of the project and the success of the PhD students of Bialystok University of Technology.
“Our work as the project coaches consisted in accompanying the students in the development of their business concept, observing and monitoring the group work of the team, indicating the best possible methods of adapting business tools in the My Irrigation Assistant (MIA) project. Students based their ideas mainly on the Business Model Canvas but also on other tools from the field of marketing and branding as well as strategic management. We asked students to prepare a mock presentation during which we provided substantive and technical guidance for the final version of their projects. Supervising students required knowledge of coaching tools and a wide range of business tools, which are used to test and implement ideas developed as start-ups,” explained Assoc. Prof. Ewa Glińska, PhD and Anna Kononiuk, PhD, from the Faculty of Engineering Management.
Honourable mentions in the European Cross-Border Doctorials summer school competition were awarded to:
1st place / Team members: Agata Witkowska (BUT) together with the PhD students from the Rezekne Academy of Technologies, Ecoles des Docteurs Toulouse, the University of Montpellier and the University of Perpignan. Travelling Brains project.
2nd place / Team members: Marta Małecka-Dobrogowska (BUT) together with the PhD students from the University of Girona in Spain, “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse from Bulgaria and Ecoles des Docteurs Toulouse from France. JUST DRONE IT project.
3rd place / Team members: Łukasz Rybinski (BUT) and the PhD students from the University of Perpignan, France. My Irrigation Assistant (MIA) project.
