The promotion of 225 positions in the Openness index is mainly due to the increase in the number of employee accounts on Google Scholar.

The presence of Bialystok University of Technology in international rankings becomes a kind of a hallmark of the University, a symbol of the quality of research and education conducted there, it also emphasises the prestige of the University. It should be remembered that the whole academic community works on the university results. The employees should actively participate in all surveys conducted by both Polish and international ranking institutions. Rankings have found their permanent place and they influence the university’s activities more and more. This may not please everyone, which is why it is worth recalling the conclusion of one article in “Le Monde”: “Rankings may irritate, but they cannot be ignored”.

It should be stressed that international rankings may be used in various ways. They can be a criterion for foreign students to choose a university, employers use rankings to recruit employees, they can be a tool to monitor the progress of modernisation reforms, they help assess the strengths and weaknesses of universities.

Thanks to the increased number of researchers’ profiles in Google Scholar, Bialystok University of Technology significantly improved its position in the latest edition of Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) in the Openness category.

The publications of the next Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) and QS World University Rankings are ahead. Staff reputation surveys are currently being conducted. Participation in reputation surveys is extremely important in constructing international rankings and the university’s position in the rankings.

All actions taken by the university’s employees will also pay off in other areas: recognition of the University, which translates into easier contacts with other universities, greater popularity among candidates, including foreigners. This is a self-reinforcing mechanism, better students mean better quality of classes and a greater challenge for the academic staff, which has to meet the expectations of ambitious young people. More valuable contacts – domestic and foreign – provide an opportunity to raise the level of research and to participate in valuable international projects. This, in turn, translates into higher and higher places in rankings, both overall and in the increasingly popular “by subject” rankings.
