Visit of Professor Peter J. Gorder from the University of Colorado
23-05-2024– Establishing contacts with the university in Colorado Springs is the result of efforts aimed at seeking new partners for Bialystok University of Technology to implement interesting scientific and educational projects. UCCS is particularly interested in engaging in interdisciplinary initiatives, also in cooperation with local business representatives. During his visit, Professor Gorder, who is the head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (the equivalent of a dean in our nomenclature), was looking for such initiatives in our faculties. It is worth noting that he has extensive experience in implementing international projects in cooperation with industry as part of the so-called Senior Design Programs, which are company-sponsored programs focused on finding solutions to various problems through interdisciplinary teams. He shared good practices in this regard with us. But we also had a lot to present in this area, as we have been running international summer schools for seven years, which fit perfectly into this trend – explains Assoc. Prof. Dorota Krawczyk, DSc, PhD, Eng, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at Bialystok University of Technology.
On the first day of his visit, Professor Peter J. Gorder met with staff from the Faculty of Engineering Management. Together with Vice-Dean for Development and Cooperation Urszula Kobylińska, PhD, Joanna Szydło, PhD – a specialist in intercultural communication, faculty mentors Marta Jarocka, PhD, and Łukasz Dragun, PhD, as well as representatives of student scientific circles, he discussed how to effectively solve engineering problems in enterprises. Representatives from IKEA Industry Poland sp. z o.o., Lubawa branch – Karolina Lewandowska and Wojciech Malinowski, also attended the meeting.
Professor Peter J. Gorder also visited the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. During the meeting, with the participation of Adam Bajkowski, PhD – Vice-Dean for Education and Student Affairs at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of BUT, Tomasz Michalik – Technical Director of SMP Poland sp. z o.o., Izabela Senderacka, PhD – Vice-Dean for Development and Cooperation at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of BUT, Piotr Tarasiuk, PhD – advisor to the student team Cerber Motorsport, and Izabela Zgłobicka, PhD – Plenipotentiary for Internationalization of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, they discussed the possibilities of cooperation and the implementation of Polish-American student team projects. The meeting was complemented by a tour of the faculty’s laboratory facilities.
On the last day of his visit, the guest spent time at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences, learning about the successes of student scientific circles “Rolka” and “Ciepłownik.” During the meeting with a group of students from the fields of thermal energy and environmental engineering, Professor Gorder presented the specifics of the University of Colorado Springs and invited students from Bialystok University of Technology to participate in joint interdisciplinary projects, which are an important part of engineering education in the USA. Additionally, the guest participated in a discussion on modern teaching methods with staff from the Department of Sustainable Construction and Building Systems and visited selected laboratories at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences of BUT.
The next meeting to strengthen Polish-American cooperation is planned for September 2024.
