Bialystok University of Technology fourth in Poland in UI GreenMetric ranking

07-12-2023

Bialystok University of Technology applied to the UI GreenMetric ranking for the first time in its history and was immediately ranked in an excellent 4th place among universities in Poland and in 382nd place out of 1183 universities from 84 countries, including 15 universities from Poland. At the same time, it is the only university from Podlasie classified in this ranking.

Such a high position of Bialystok University of Technology is the result of the university’s extensive policy on the implementation of the UN and European Commission Sustainable Development Goals. It is also the result of consistent and dynamic implementation of the Sustainability Strategy ‘My Green University’, adopted in 2022.

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is a green campus and sustainability ranking initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. The ranking measures the commitment and environmental initiatives of universities from around the world.

Universities are assessed on the basis of 39 indicators within six main criteria:

  • Setting and Infrastructure focused on environmental protection, space for greenery, percentage of university budget for sustainability efforts;
  • Energy and Climate Change – university’s attention to the use of energy-efficient equipment and development of renewable energy;
  • Waste – waste management programmes and practices (e.g. recycling programme, toxic waste, organic and inorganic waste, etc.);
  • Water, where the focus is on reducing groundwater consumption, and water conservation programmes;
  • Transportation – evaluation of transport policy (e.g. limiting the number of private vehicles);
  • Education & Research, where courses, research, publications, websites and reports related to ecology and sustainability are evaluated.

It should be emphasised that Bialystok University of Technology also achieved excellent results in the individual criteria:

In Poland:

  • Waste – 1st place with Gdansk University of Technology and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan
  • Water – 2nd place,
  • Education & Research – 2nd place,
  • Energy and Climate Change – 3rd place.
