A woman with curly red hair and glasses, dressed in a green academic gown and a white fur-trimmed cape, ceremonially taps a young man on the shoulder with a golden mace during a graduation or academic ceremony. The young man and other formally dressed individuals stand in a row, with men and women in suits and dresses. In the background, other attendees and the interior of a formal hall are visible.
On 2 October 2025, Bialystok University of Technology inaugurated the new 2025/2026 academic year. – Our task is to instil in young people a passion for science and research – said Assoc. Prof. Marta Kosior-Kazberuk, DSc, PhD, Eng., Rector of Bialystok University of Technology, during her inaugural speech.

The inauguration ceremony gathered numerous guests and friends of the University. Among them were Prof. Zbigniew Pater, Rector of Lublin University of Technology, and Prof. Piotr Koszelnik, Rector of Rzeszow University of Technology. On the initiative of the Rector of Bialystok University of Technology, the Via Carpatia Polytechnic Network was established in 2022, and the impressive achievements of the three partner universities were one of the main topics highlighted in the inaugural address of Assoc. Prof. Marta Kosior-Kazberuk.

– The driving force behind the development of a modern university lies in broadly understood cooperation – emphasised the Rector. – At Bialystok University of Technology, we know this very well. After all, “Together everyone achieves more.” – Dear Students, the main heroes of the Inauguration of the Academic Year, you have chosen very well. Being an engineer is a way of life. I assure you that you will be able to handle any professional and social situation.

Key elements of the University’s development include its co-creation of the European University Across, cooperation with the socio-economic environment, and new projects such as “WINGS with BUT” and “BUT Accessible 2.0”.

Guests’ speeches

Barbara Okuła read a letter from Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm, addressed to the academic community of Bialystok University of Technology on the occasion of the inauguration of the new academic year. The Speaker emphasised that the University is a place where ideas that change reality are born and where successive generations of specialists and leaders are educated to respond to new social, technological, and environmental challenges.

The ceremony was honoured by the presence of Prof. Maria Mrówczyńska, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education. She read a letter from Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education, which stated, among other things, that the best response to geopolitical challenges is effective cooperation between universities and industry, as it forms the foundation of security policy.

Stefan Krajewski, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who attended the inauguration during his visit to the University, emphasised the importance of cooperation between agriculture and engineering sciences, especially in the context of current projects carried out by researchers at Bialystok University of Technology. The Minister pointed out that modern agriculture relies not on physical strength, but on cutting-edge technologies such as unmanned vehicles, drones, and robots — the results of engineers’ and designers’ work.

Dr Jacek Brzozowski, Voivode of Podlaskie Province, remarked that today’s world is marked by unrest, wars, and global tensions, where the word “risk” takes on many forms. Despite these historical upheavals, the role and importance of the academy and the university remain unchanged. It is scholars and students, not buildings, who create these institutions. He also appealed for courage in thought and responsibility in speech.

Łukasz Prokorym, Marshal of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, highlighted that the beginning of the new academic year is an important day for both Bialystok University of Technology and the entire region.

– Bialystok University of Technology is above all a Podlaskie Brand – said the Marshal. – This is evidenced not only by the achievements of students and professors but also by the results of our recent Podlaska Marka Roku competition, in which Bialystok University of Technology won two awards, and the Rector received the title of Honorary Ambassador of the Podlaskie Voivodeship 2024.

Assoc. Prof. Tadeusz Truskolaski, DSc, PhD, President of the City of Bialystok and economist, shared data showing that despite demographic decline, the number of students at the region’s three leading universities has increased by 4%. The largest growth – 6% – was recorded at Bialystok University of Technology. This, he stressed, is the result of excellent cooperation between the city, the region, and the University.

Prof. Olena Stepova, Vice-Rector for Science at Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava National Technical University in Ukraine, read a congratulatory letter from Prof. Volodymyr Onyszczenko, Rector of that University.

Prof. Oleh Karyy, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at Lviv Polytechnic National University, said:

– I hope that the threats we face together from the East will serve as additional motivation for our joint work, shared development, and common successes. Once again, best wishes from Lviv Polytechnic on the occasion of the start of the new academic year.

Why Bialystok University of Technology?

– My idea for university studies was to develop in computer science – says Wojciech Tatarczyk, first-year computer science student at the Faculty of Computer Science. – Bialystok University of Technology was my first choice, and, as it turns out, the right one. I want to learn the basics of computer science, earn my engineering degree, and perhaps continue to a master’s programme. These fundamentals are essential to move forward, develop skills and knowledge, and complete additional training required by future employers.

Urszula Woźniak has begun her studies in graphic design at the Faculty of Architecture.

– The entrance exam was quite stressful, but now I’m really happy – says Woźniak, a graduate of the 6th Secondary School in Bialystok. – I study in a building where inspiration can be found everywhere. The corridors and halls showcase student projects, which really create an inspiring atmosphere. I hope that one day my work will also be displayed here.

Practical study programmes at Bialystok University of Technology guarantee well-paid and engaging jobs in the future.

– Honestly, I’ve always wanted to become an engineer, so I chose Bialystok University of Technology and the Electrical Engineering programme – says Zofia Grela. – In high school, I chose an advanced mathematics and physics profile specifically to pursue something related to those subjects. My grandfather was the happiest in my family when he learned I would study electrical engineering. He said that there will always be demand for specialists in this field.

Referring to the Minister of Agriculture’s remarks, Alan Kondrusik, MSc, Eng., a graduate of Automation and Robotics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and now a new doctoral student, added:

– I applied to the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology to develop my passion for science, and I hope that during my doctoral work I will propose a new patent or method applicable to modern agriculture. I plan to design a device that, using various techniques, will speed up the testing of agricultural products for toxic compounds. It’s an example of automation and robotics in the service of modern agriculture.

Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, the Doctoral School of Bialystok University of Technology expanded its offer to include a new discipline: forest sciences.

– I believe it is worth studying forest ecosystems, and I’m very happy that I can do it as a doctoral student of Bialystok University of Technology – says Ewelina Bagińska, MSc, Eng., a biotechnology graduate from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences. – At our University, I’ve met true mentors, people who can inspire and guide young researchers. These are Marek Wołkowycki and Yauheni Yurchanka, PhD, Eng. – two outstanding mycologists. Under their supervision, I will study the biodiversity of aphyllophoroid (wood-decaying) fungi.

Bialystok University of Technology ranks first in Poland in terms of the number of incoming Erasmus+ students for studies and internships.

– During our studies at Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, we heard about Bialystok University of Technology as a partner institution in the Erasmus+ programme – says Pedro Alba Garcia, a student of administration from Spain. – We googled Bialystok and immediately thought it looked like a beautiful city. We were also convinced by the possibility of coming here as a group of four. So far, we are doing great and really like it here. The Faculty of Engineering Management, where we study, is only a few minutes away from the main campus and the student residence halls.

New study programmes and specialisations attract students from all over the world.

– I’m interested in developing knowledge and skills in cybersecurity – says Ruslan Zagidullin from Kazakhstan. – I’m curious how these topics are approached at your university. I also heard about researchers and laboratories at Bialystok University of Technology working on biometric technologies – another field that fascinates me.

Students of the Academic Secondary School of Bialystok University of Technology have also begun their studies at the new school, joining the academic community. Taking part in the inauguration was an important experience for them.

– I most want to deepen my knowledge and become a wiser and better person – says Karolina Chlebowicz, a first-year student in the programming profile. – That’s what I’m looking for in this school.

Students emphasise the unique atmosphere and high level of education they have found at the academic secondary school.

– I care about good academic results – says Leonard Piotrowski, a first-year student in the eco-engineering profile. – But what makes me happiest is that I study in a school where everyone knows each other and no one feels anonymous. During the orientation camp, I met students from all the first-year classes, and I’m glad because it’s a very cohesive group.

A new academic year for more than 7,500 students!

On 1 October 2025, 7,478 students began their studies at Bialystok University of Technology, including 2,541 first-year students. The University also hosts nearly 350 international students, who came for studies under the Erasmus+ Programme or other international exchange agreements.
