The main theme of the workshop was advancing the internationalisation of universities and creating an open academic environment. This enables the exchange of knowledge and experience in engineering education through the mobility of students and researchers.

Meetings with representatives of partner universities are a key element of Bialystok University of Technology’s strategy for internationalisation. Supported by the Erasmus+ Programme, the university organises these events twice a year, in spring and winter.

– We are thrilled that our international partners, from both Europe and beyond, accept our invitations and visit Bialystok University of Technology, – says Assoc. Prof. Dorota Anna Krawczyk, DSc, PhD, Eng, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation. – This builds trust and provides a solid foundation for developing international relations. During the Erasmus+ International Staff Week, we strengthen long-standing friendships and partnerships and establish new ones. Representatives from foreign universities can see for themselves that they can confidently recommend Bialystok University of Technology as a destination for their students and staff. International exchange offers immense value for the entire university, as well as new opportunities for the personal and academic development of our teachers, administrative staff, and students.

The 13th Erasmus+ International Staff Week at Bialystok University of Technology took place from 2nd to 6th December 2024, welcoming representatives from across the globe: Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Mauritius, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, Taiwan, and Turkey.

For the first time, a delegation from Mozambique visited the university. Representatives from Eduardo Mondlane University highlighted that their country is among Africa’s “safe countries,” an important consideration when planning bilateral exchanges. The university already has some experience with mobility programmes, having hosted a student from Mozambique for a semester.

Mauritius was represented by a delegate from the University of Mauritius, marking another African presence at the event. Previously, Ewa Girejko, PhD from the Faculty of Computer Science at Bialystok University of Technology visited this institution. The University of Mauritius holds a high position in global rankings, and collaboration with its researchers enhances the quality of scientific work. Joint publications have a strong potential for recognition in prestigious academic journals.

Bialystok University of Technology welcomed a representative from Universidad Iberoamericana Mexico City. In autumn 2024, the two universities signed a cooperation agreement, which includes the exchange of students and researchers. At the university in Mexico City, participants will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and cutting-edge research facilities.

The international meeting marathon during the Erasmus+ International Staff Week lasted five days. As part of the event, colourful “Cultural Stands” were set up in the lobby of BUT’s Centre for Modern Education. These stands showcased partner universities collaborating with BUT. The programme also included presentations and open lectures conducted by participants for students and staff of Bialystok University of Technology.

On Wednesday, 4th December, attendees participated in the annual “Christmas Meeting”. The event featured Tomasz Klim, Deputy President of Bialystok, who extended his wishes to the university’s international guests. He remarked, – We are delighted that students from all over the world are eager to come to Bialystok, enriching our community. Openness to new cultures is ingrained in our DNA.

In the QS Europe University Rankings 2024, published in September, BUT achieved a remarkable first place in Poland and 24th in Europe in the “Inbound Student Exchange” category. Considering the ranking included 688 universities from 42 European countries, including 33 from Poland, this achievement is truly outstanding. The university also ranked highly in the “Outbound Student Exchange” category, securing 8th place among Polish universities.

This success is partly attributed to the strong network of connections that BUT cultivates through initiatives like the Erasmus+ International Staff Week. Participants gain a unique opportunity to experience the university’s friendly atmosphere and face-to-face interactions, showcasing BUT as an excellent partner for international academic mobility.

The event fosters fresh ideas for collaboration, with participants sharing best educational practices and strategies to engage students. After spending a week in Bialystok, attendees often return to their home institutions as ambassadors of Bialystok University of Technology, actively recommending it to their students.
