More than forty young engineers from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Peru, Turkey, India, Lithuania and Latvia chose to spend their summer holidays getting to know another country and acquiring new knowledge and skills. These are the participants of two international summer schools that Bialystok University of Technology organised in late June and early July.

The foreign students and a group of students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences of Bialystok University of Technology are taking part in lectures and laboratory classes at our university. They learn about the specifics of Podlasie businesses and visit the region.

21 students from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and India are taking part in the Interdisciplinary International Summer School ‘Energy-efficient construction, users and environment friendly’, which started on 27 June this year. The students are taking part in classes onsite at Bialystok University of Technology as well as classes conducted online. The school’s programme also includes study visits to industry companies, where students gain practical knowledge.

The school is implemented by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences, with the support of staff from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Computer Science of BUT. Specialists from foreign universities are also involved in the teaching process. The project is co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange within the SPINNAKER – Intensive International Curricula programme and by European Union funds from the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development.

Four students each from Lithuania, Latvia, Italy and Spain, as well as four students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences of Bialystok University of Technology, began classes within the International Summer School Advanced Digital Design Course On Modern Buildings Developing SKILLS for Young Engineers on 4 July. For 10 days, students will participate in 40 hours of classes, which include laboratories, practical activities, individual work and work in design teams. In addition, they will complete 40 hours of online activities – a minimum of four e-modules on energy, IoT, BIM, building energy efficiency, etc., a minimum of four e-labs with open online access.

The Add-On-Skills School is implemented by the BUT Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences. Specialists from partner universities are also involved in the teaching process. The project is co-financed by the European Union under Action 2: Strategic Partnerships of the Erasmus+ Programme.

What is important, participants of both summer schools take part in cultural excursions around Białystok and the region. In their free time, they have the opportunity to learn about regional cuisine, Polish customs and traditions, and take part in various recreational and integration activities.

The coordinator of both projects is the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Assoc. Prof. Dorota Anna Krawczyk, DSc, PhD, Eng, who emphasises that by establishing cooperation with students and universities from abroad, the strategic goals of our university concerning the internationalisation of the process of educating young engineers are being realised.
