IV East Design Days on 25 and 26 November 2021

“Let’s meet at the table” is the motto of this year’s series of events of IV East Design Days. From 25 November, for the fourth time in its history, the Faculty of Architecture at Bialystok University of Technology, together with companies and institutions from the north-eastern Poland, invites you to meetings with a mission to present significant achievements emerging at the intersection of design, technology and business. Moreover, there will be a real meeting at the table with masters of the culinary arts.

– We have a perfect theme – “Let’s meet at the table,” says Assoc. Prof. Aleksander Asanowicz, DSc, PhD, Eng, Arch., Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. – We want all of us to work together for the benefit of our region, the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The Faculty of Architecture is not confined to a building, we – the students and staff – have enormous creative potential and can contribute a great deal to the development of the province. We count on the help, support and cooperation of the Podlaskie Voivodeship Marshal’s Office. This is a great opportunity for us and for the region.

From this edition, it is the Podlaskie Voivodeship Marshal’s Office that is the institution supporting East Design Days.

– I’m pleased to have been asked to cooperate in such a good promotional project for the Podlaskie Voivodeship,” says Artur Kosicki, Marshall of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. – We’ll be discussing how wood can be used. We talked about this recently at EXPO 2020 in Dubai. The entire Xylopolis exhibition, also with partners who participate in this undertaking, turned out to be a hit. We will continue with these activities, talking about how wood has become part of our history and culture, but also about how wood can be used in the economy. Let this be a foretaste of what we’re planning together with Bialystok University of Technology, namely the implementation of the Xylopolis project, right here at Bialystok University of Technology.
Marshal Artur Kosicki also pointed out that during the IV East Design Days, during the thematic panels, the organisers devoted time to young residents of the voivodeship.

– This is very important from the point of view of Podlaskie Voivodeship’s development – claims Artur Kosicki. The greatest potential of this voivodeship are young people, the young and creative, which was also expressed at Expo 2020 in Dubai. Adam Zdanowicz was present there, who does phenomenal things, things known all over the world, and this shows that you can do these things, you can make a name for yourself on a global scale just by operating in the Podlaskie Voivodeship!

Artur Kosicki also noted the importance of culinary arts in the programme of IV East Design Days

– Everyone knows our dishes, but even during the meeting with Mr Okrasa, one of the gurus of Polish cuisine, we said that we should promote these products on a global scale and this is what we want to achieve with such events,” noted the Marshal.
He also referred to the multicultural character of the voivodeship.

– We should show even more intensely how these cultures live together, what cultural, religious and national diversity there is, because this is the strength of this region – emphasises Artur Kosicki. – The strength of Podlaskie, and what is most wonderful, are its people. Without them this voivodeship wouldn’t go up, and without your ideas – because there’s the Unitalent Foundation, with which we’re preparing the Xylopolis project, there’s Bialystok University of Technology, which also takes part in this project. Soon we will be presenting the new EU perspective and new ideas for the development of Podlaskie. Both Bialystok University of Technology and the President of the Management Board are aware that we will soon show that we are also open for business, entrepreneurs. Because without an economically strong region, all these plans cannot be realised. I think that our cooperation is the beginning of a wider action for the future.

IV East Design Days means also a lot of very interesting guests.

– We invite everyone to the table – there will be people from Podlasie and people from all over the world,’ says Elwira Horosz, fashion designer. – Here, at the architecture table, people from China and Bhutan will sit down and tell us what the table means in their culture. It will be the first time in Poland that we will talk on such a large scale about food design, about the culture of serving food, what it looks like not only in Podlasie, but also in the world.

In addition to the studios and exhibitions in the hall of the Faculty of Architecture, this year’s East Design Days will also feature a block of meetings in the Alfa Centrum shopping centre, a concert by the PRO8L3M band in Zmiana Klimatu music club, and a dinner in the Gorta Factory, which manufactures kitchen appliances.

– There will a possibility to meet these master chefs directly and hear about many secrets of cooking,” adds Elwira Horosz. – The dinner will be prepared for 120 people, we are building 40 metres of scenery and five master chefs will be cooking. It will be an amazing event, because we have asked them to prepare dishes in our four themes, which appear in panels, and the scenery is also prepared for this. This has never happened before in Podlasie!

Elwira Horosz reminds us that both the inhabitants and entrepreneurs, as well as young people, are invited to participate in the IV East Design Days. They will be able to follow the events on the Internet, but also to visit, for example, the hall of the Faculty of Architecture, where unique exhibitions will be waiting.

– We want to share what we have as a city and as a region, hence, among others, the theme of wood in architecture – explains Adam Jakimowicz, PhD, Eng, Arch, Vice-Dean for Development and Cooperation. – It is a carrier of both tradition modern art and design. We will host a great architect Szymon Wojciechowski, but also a great celebrity from Norway – Siv Helena Stangeland, who is preparing a special lecture for us on the use of wood in architecture in Norway. Her design company does really incredible things. We want to share both our experiences and tradition, but also learn how wood can become a modern building material.

During IV East Design Days there will be also finals of the competition for the best thesis “Wood in architecture”.

– This nationwide competition has become a significant brand in Poland – almost 50 works by young architects have been submitted,’ says Adam Jakimowicz. – These works are really beautiful.

IV East Design Days is also about the art of furniture making. The guest of the event will be Paweł Grunert, who will talk about the art of unique furniture and will bring an exhibition of his works.

The crowning touch of one of the four thematic blocks of this year’s East Design Days, the Food Design block, will be the Food Design Dinner. In the unobvious interior of a catering equipment factory, four tables will be set up in an almost theatrical scenography. Culinary virtuosos will take their guests on an over three-hour journey through the fascinating world of flavours and aromas. Combining their passions, extraordinary creativity and experience, they have created an original menu full of unexpected flavours and violent emotions.

The masters are: Robert Sowa, Marcin Budynek, Łukasz Rakowski and Ewelina Łapińska. Desserts will be provided by the E.Wedel Chocolate Maestro, Janusz Profus, and wine will be selected and commented on by Joanna Ciborowska Sanchez – a sommelier and a judge of international wine competitions.
Earlier, for two days in the hall of the Faculty of Architecture of Bialystok University of Technology, debates and meetings grouped in four thematic blocks will be held:

– Wood – architecture of the future?
– Food Design
– Talents of the future
– Design and competitiveness

Some meetings and presentations concerning food design will be held in the Alfa Centrum shipping centre.
