The ranking is compiled by experts from Stanford University in cooperation with Elsevier and SciTech Strategies. It is based on data from the Scopus database, while the main criteria used to assess research achievements include the number of citations, the Hirsch index and the Schreiber index, which takes co-authorship into account.
The ranking comprises two separate lists. The first considers achievements over an entire research career, including publications and citations up to the end of 2025. The second is based on bibliometric data from the most recent calendar year, in this case 2025.
