Bialystok University of Technology Organised the EastROBO 2025 Robotics Tournament
07-04-2025
Bialystok University of Technology organised the 10th edition of the International EastROBO Robotics Tournament. Over 220 robots took part – from LEGO-based constructions to advanced rovers. The competition included ten categories.
The greatest excitement was sparked by the events that posed the biggest challenges for the designers and their robots. These included Linefollower, where the robot must quickly and flawlessly follow a marked line, and the sumo category, where autonomous robots battle on a special mat. The highlight of the competition is the FreeStyle category, in which both observers and participants vote for the tournament’s best robot.
In the FreeStyle category of EastROBO 2025, two robots reached the podium: Catch the light by the Lithuanian team RoboLabas, chosen by the audience, and Polones from Bialystok University of Technology, recognised by the tournament judges.
– Polones is a mobile platform with various capabilities, such as 2D and 3D space scanning and mapping. It can be used in the military or by other services securing specific areas – said Marek Lipski, a student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Bialystok University of Technology and a member of the PB Rover Team, which builds analogue Mars rovers as part of the Robotics Students’ Research Group.
In March 2025, the Polones robot won first place at the international Sun City Robot Battle in Šiauliai, Lithuania.
Patrycja Bućko from the Academic Secondary School of Bialystok University of Technology built ExCam, a rover designed for collecting data on surveyed terrain. She presented her robot in the FreeStyle category.
– It’s an exploration rover. While building it, I mainly wanted to focus on creating a universal platform. Additional devices can be attached, such as a Geiger counter for rapid radiation detection – explained Patrycja.
The International EastROBO Robotics Tournament at Bialystok University of Technology attracted school students from all over Poland, including from Bialystok, Bieruń near Katowice, Malechowo in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Koszalin, Rybnik in the Silesian Voivodeship, and Gdańsk.
– With our group from the robotics club at Nicolaus Copernicus High School No. 1 in Gdańsk, we build and programme autonomous robots, try to cultivate a passion for robotics, and compete in tournaments in the spirit of fair play – said Michał Kaczmarek from the ROBOILO Young Robotics Club. – It’s great fun and an opportunity to gain technical and engineering skills.
Students from the School and Preschool Complex in Malechowo entered their robots in the LEGO Sumo and Minisumo categories.
– You have to build the robot, programme it, upload the code to the microcontroller and choose the right speed to complete the course. It’s not difficult, and you can build the robot however you like – it all depends on your imagination- said Kajetan Pacławski from Malechowo.
Higher education institutions were represented by students from Bialystok University of Technology, Rzeszów University of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and the University of Bielsko-Biała. Lithuanian competitors came from Panevėžys.
EastROBO is a major celebration for robotics and technology enthusiasts. Since 2012, it has been organised by students from the Intelligent Mobile Systems Research Group at the Faculty of Computer Science of Bialystok University of Technology.
– We organise the tournament out of passion for robotics,’ said Bartłomiej Karanowski, a graduate of the Faculty of Computer Science at Bialystok University of Technology and Vice-President of the Intelligent Mobile Systems Research Group. – Although it’s quite a challenge to organise, EastROBO has become our tradition. Every year many participants want to join – from young kids who can build LEGO robots to advanced engineers, whom we often meet at national and international competitions. In robotics, it’s all about the idea – that’s what makes it exciting. The idea can make or break a robot’s chances in its category.
At the International EastROBO Robotics Tournament at Bialystok University of Technology, attendees could explore a variety of robot constructions, meet young robotics enthusiasts, and watch sumo robot battles or line follower challenges.
– It’s a noble and brilliant competition – a contest of minds, really – because what counts is the idea, creativity, and clever strategy – said Assoc. Prof. Mirosław Świercz, DSc, PhD, Eng, Vice-Rector for Development at Bialystok University of Technology. -I greatly admire the organisers of this event, as it keeps growing year after year, with new categories and new participants. It’s extremely valuable for young people and our students, as it helps them develop their natural talents for innovation and gain organisational experience.
EastROBO 2025 featured 10 competition categories: Junior LEGO Sumo, Junior LEGO LineFollower, LEGO Sumo, LEGO LineFollower, Freestyle, LineFollower, LineFollower Turbo, Micro Sumo, Mini Sumo, and Mega Sumo.
The International EastROBO Robotics Tournament was held on 5 April 2025 at Bialystok University of Technology. The event was organised by the Intelligent Mobile Systems Research Group at the Faculty of Computer Science. The group’s academic supervisor is Dr Teodora Dimitrova-Grekow from the Department of Digital Media and Computer Graphics. Members of the group were supported by volunteers from the Student Government of Bialystok University of Technology.
The organisation of EastROBO 2025 was supported by the City of Bialystok and the Marshal’s Office of the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
