Warsaw Old Town
Did you know that the Warsaw Old Town is the only area in the world of the planned reconstruction of the entire historic urban district which experienced enormous damage during World War II, reaching 90% of the buildings?
Since the city plans had also been destroyed by the Nazi occupiers during the war, a team of architects and art historians used among others, paintings by the Italian painter Canaletto to develop a design for the reconstruction of the city. Therefore, today’s Old Town looks the way it looked in the 18th century, and not the way it appeared just before the war.
In 1980, the rebuilt Old Town was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the unique example of a complete reconstruction of the historic complex.
