The Wieliczka Salt Mine
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest rock salt mines in the world and the longest operating industrial plant. The mine was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 as one of the first 12 sites in the world.
Salt in Wieliczka was mined continuously for 700 years until 1996. At that time, the mine was finally closed and the 3 km long route was adapted for sightseeing. It is a unique object: in addition to mining salt, in the underground chambers miners-artists sculpted masterpieces in the walls and salt lumps, such as altars, statues of saints, bas-reliefs and even chandeliers.
During the tour, you can watch a short film in the only 5D underground cinema in the world!
