St. Dominic’s Fair
St. Dominic’s Fair is one of the oldest cyclic cultural and commercial events in Europe. It has been taking place in the Old Town of Gdańsk for 760 years!
In the 13th century the Dominican Order of Gdańsk started a folk festival on St. Dominic’s Day (then celebrated on August 4th), which was to coax the faithful to participate in the holy mass that granted them 100 days later indulgences. After diligent prayers, the faithful enjoyed the feast, which from year to year became longer and more and more profitable for the city authorities.
Currently, St. Dominic’s Fair begins at the end of July and lasts three weeks during which at the stalls you can buy almost everything: artistic handicrafts, jewelry (especially made of amber), treats, surprising toys, unusual antiques and much more. You can also watch colorful processions, concerts, theater, juggling and circus troupes.
Merchants and artists from various parts of Poland and Europe show their works at the Fair. Tourists come to this event in large numbers: it is estimated that about 5-8 million people participate in this event annually.
This event is not to be missed in the coming year, so look for the latest information on the official website, in English: https://jarmarkswdominika.pl/
