Polish doughnuts
Pączki – or Polish doughnuts – is one of the most traditional and favourite Polish desserts.
The tradition of frying doughnuts with fruit or rose filling dates back to the early 18th century. But most doughnuts we eat on Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek), which is the last Thursday before the Great Lent. They taste best on that day. There is a common superstition that if you don’t eat a doughnut on Fat Thursday, you’ll have bad luck at some point during the year.
It is estimated that 100 million doughnuts are consumed every year just on this one day!
