The Church of Peace in Świdnica
The Church of Peace in Świdnica, in Lower Silesia – an Evangelical church from the 17th century, one of the largest wooden churches in Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
When Silesia came under Austrian rule in the 17th century, the Catholic emperor did not allow other religious denominations to build temples. However, he gave permission to the Silesian Lutherans to build three churches but … they had to stand outside the city walls and be made of perishable materials such as wood, clay, sand and straw. Such materials were used to build the Church of Peace in Świdnica and another similar one in Jawor. Both are now among the most valuable monuments in the region.
