Professor from Estonia at FLC and a lesson on circular economy in English
08-12-2025During the XV International Staff Week, students of FLC had the pleasure to meet guests from partner universities from all over the world. The cultural stands of the event, showcasing traditions, cuisine and student life, created an inspiring backdrop for intercultural exchange and dialogue. Among the guests was a visiting professor from Estonia.
Dr. Veiko Karu from Estonia Business School gave a presentation on the concept of circular economy, especially in the context of civil engineering and sustainable development of the Baltic Sea region. He is a member of the Baltic University Programme (BUP), an initiative supported by FLC and BUT.
Dr. Karu explained how the circular economy differs from the traditional linear “take, make, dispose” model, emphasizing the principles of resource efficiency and waste minimization, especially in the mining industry. Part of the lecture addressed the sustainability challenges in the Baltic Sea region, showing how civil engineers and regional planners are increasingly integrating circular solutions to increase ecosystem resilience. The students learned how necessary international cooperation is to achieve common sustainable development goals in this connected region.
FLC contributed to this exchange by showing how language classes can serve as a platform for interdisciplinary learning. We look forward to the next editions of International Staff Week, continuing to build bridges between cultures, disciplines and shared commitments for a sustainable future.
