Happy Plain English Week!
08-10-2023Why use words like “terminate”, “pejorative” or “initiate” instead of “end”, “bad” or “start”? Why “purchase” when you can simply “buy”?
International Plain Language Day is celebrated every year on 13th October.
Plain language can be understood by the average person.
To improve communication:
- remember to keep sentences short;
- use familiar words and phrases;
- keep an eye on the main idea in each sentence;
- avoid unnecessary embellishments and impersonal forms.
Try to write official texts (e.g. applications) and technical texts (e.g. instruction manuals) as well as emails and announcements in a simple manner. This way you show your respect for the reader. Using simple language builds your credibility and inspires trust.
Do you want to learn more about effective communication and try your hand at writing in plain English? Register for the workshop “Plain English for Beginners”!
Whenever you use English for studying, work or pleasure, learn some basic concepts how to make it more accessible!
The workshop will take place on 13th October at 6pm in the CNK building (the Main Library), 2nd floor, Room 3. The next opportunity is not until next year!
