The colourful world of Peking opera at Bialystok University of Technology

On the 13th of December, we stepped into the magnificent world of Peking opera (京剧, Jīngjù), with the help of one of our Chinese teachers, Kaining Yang.

Kaining gave a presentation which included an overview of the history behind China’s most famous opera form, a classification of the main roles (生 Shēng, 旦 Dàn, 净 Jìng and 丑 Chǒu), details about the most famous artists, and how the symbolism associated with Peking opera is used in contemporary pieces.
The highlight of the event was Kaining’s vocal performance, a recording of which can be found on our social media (Facebook/Instagram).

Afterwards, the three participants of the event who scored best in the quiz prepared by the our Chinese teacher were awarded with gifts. There were also refreshments, which were followed by the painting of masks inspired by the colourful make-up closely associated with Peking opera.

We would like to thank everyone who spent this sunny Friday afternoon with us, including the students and staff members of Bialystok University of Technology, as well as the students of the Music School Complex in Bialystok! We hope to see you again at future events organised as part of our activities.
