European bison – the king of the primeval forest<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Not many people know that after World War I the last bison was shot in Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Primeval Forest which was the only habitat of the species at that time. Other bisons \u2013 the total number of which was 54 \u2013 were kept in zoological gardens in different parts of the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was thanks to a group of Polish and foreign scientists who engaged in the tedious and long-lasting process of restoration, that the species finally returned to its natural habitat. Their work was conducted in Bia\u0142owie\u017ca, that\u2019s why nowadays bison is the most recognizable symbol of Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Primeval Forest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These huge and heavy animals, whose average weight is 700 kg, can run 50 kilometers per hour when endangered. They can jump over ditches and fences with such agility that no one would suspect them of. Better not get in their way!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nowadays, it is possible and highly advisable to see European bisons in their natural environment, in Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Primeval Forest, in the region of Podlasie.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
