The capital of the region is Bia\u0142ystok. It has about 1.2 million inhabitants, of which 300,000 are in the capital city itself. It covers an area of approximately 20,200 km2. The voivodship has a border with Lithuania and partly also with Belarus. The region is quite multicultural. Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Jews, and even Tatars live here. In addition to churches, you can also find many orthodox churches and synagogues. There is also the only mosque in Poland. You can also meet residents from other countries. It is the heart of the city, beating with a lively rhythm. The most important building on Market Square is standing in the center of the Town Hall with a clock tower, completed in 1761. The building was touring on the spot, permanent merchant stalls here, as applied to the Jewish collection in 1939. In 1954, the Russians demolished the historic Town Hall, but it was restored in 1954-58. The park is located in the city center and surrounds the Branicki Palace from almost every side. Planty was designed by Stanis\u0142aw Grall. It has an area of 14 ha. It is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities. A walk along the avenues of the plant is made more pleasant by beautifully trimmed hedges, compositions of flower beds, magnificent thuja, and well-kept ponds. This place is a memento of the family Branicki and is called the residence of the Branicki family or the Versailles of Podlasie. Palace Branicki is a public utility building, its seat there Medical University. Part of the interior of the historic building is available to visit for tourists.
