The Podlasie Province is known as the green lungs of Poland owing to its unique ecological assets. In the vicinity of Bia\u0142ystok there are a lot of natural and historical complexes, unique on the European scale. There are, above all, the Bia\u0142owie\u017ca National Park \u2013 the mainstay of aurochs in Europe, the Narew National Park \u2013 the mainstay of many extremely rare species of water and marsh birds, the Biebrza National Park \u2013 the largest valley bog complex in Central Europe, the Wigry National Park with Wigry lake \u2013 the second deepest lake in Poland,the Knyszyn Forest Landscape Park \u2013 the primeval forest adjacent to Bia\u0142ystok, the \u0141om\u017ca Landscape Park of Narew Valley and the Suwa\u0142ki Landscape Park. While he was resting over a stream, someone told him \u201cWhat a clear, white stok. You could build a hunting court here or even set a village\u201d. In those days stok meant a small brook that runs down the hill. The brook is here also today, known as the Bia\u0142a River (the White River). Undoubtedly the most precious monument of Bia\u0142ystok architecture is the 18th century Branicki Palace. Its shape is the reflection of kindly ambitions of the great hetman Jan Klemens Branicki.
