The conference <em>Advanced Hybrid Lightweight Materials and Technologies for Global Circular Economy<\/em> took place on 20\u201321 May at Bialystok University of Technology.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>LIMACON 2026 Advanced Hybrid Lightweight Materials and Technologies for Global Circular Economy opened with a panel on strengthening regional resilience through cross-border cooperation and innovation in response to emerging challenges. The discussion brought together:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assoc. Prof. Marta Kosior-Kazberuk, DSc, PhD, Eng \u2013 Rector of Bialystok University of Technology, Poland<\/li>\n<li>Sebastian Rynkiewicz \u2013 EVOLUMA, Poland<\/li>\n<li>Vaiva Patamsyt\u0117 \u2013 Innovation Agency, Lithuania<\/li>\n<li>Andrius Vilkauskas \u2013 LINPRA, Lithuania<\/li>\n<li>Albert Langkamp \u2013 TU Dresden, Germany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2013 <em>Having operated for 77 years in a border region, we have extensive experience in functioning in an international and intercultural environment<\/em> \u2013 says Assoc. Prof. Marta Kosior-Kazberuk, DSc, PhD, Eng, Rector of Bialystok University of Technology. \u2013 <em>This is particularly important now, as the concept of security and resilience is currently underlined in every possible context. Bialystok University of Technology engages in this area through research conducted together with foreign partners, but also through the very idea of international cooperation implemented, for example, within the European University Across, which gathers consortium partners from universities located in border regions across Europe. This is our soul, our mission, and at this moment, it is a mission that can be said to operate on the edge of Europe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Composite technologies play a strategic role in the modern world, especially in the context of armed conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>Composite rods and reinforcements allow Poland to be resource-independent from other countries, because we can produce both the fibres and the resin ourselves, while other steel or metal elements are sourced abroad. Developing this field therefore also strengthens our material independence<\/em> \u2013 says Andrzej Czulak from the Polish Composite Technology Cluster. \u2013 <em>The most important aspect today, especially in the region where we are, in Central and Eastern Europe, is that composite components are predestined for defence purposes. For a missile to fly farther, it must be lighter. To make better armour for a soldier or a tank, and to keep it lightweight, it must be made from composite elements. So composites are fundamental for national defence. Composite technologies are incredibly important today, not only because they reduce energy consumption by lowering the weight of vehicles or transported components, but also because they can be developed in an eco-friendly way, which makes them very important for reducing the carbon footprint.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction and resource independence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experts emphasise the great potential of non-metallic reinforcement in reducing the environmental impact of construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>The topic of construction and composites in construction is the largest possible field that should be developed in Poland<\/em> \u2013 continues Andrzej Czulak. \u2013 <em>Developing ultra-lightweight and very durable reinforcements for concrete allows us to reduce the thickness of concrete. What does this mean? It means using less concrete. We are \u201cconcreting\u201d our planet less. The strength is the same, but concrete is a material that generates one of the largest carbon footprints \u2013 the less concrete and cement we need to produce at very high temperatures, the more eco-friendly the buildings are.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bialystok University of Technology has been researching non-metallic reinforcement for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>We work on FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) technology<\/em> \u2013 recalls Julita Krassowska, PhD, Eng, Assistant Professor at the Department of Building Structures and Structural Mechanics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences at Bialystok University of Technology. \u2013 <em>These are composite rods. Our research focuses on the application of such elements in construction. The greatest potential we see in our studies is in prefabricated concrete, road and bridge infrastructure, structures exposed to corrosion, or thin-walled elements. We aim to use structures that are lighter, have a smaller carbon footprint, and are completely corrosion-resistant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Krassowska participated in a discussion on lightweight construction engineering as a driver of sustainable industry.<\/p>\n<p>The conference also addressed hydrogen technologies, new 3D printing methods, and recycling, including the use of organic materials (e.g., fungi). Student involvement at Bialystok University of Technology is an important aspect.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>Both at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences, we work with composite materials \u2013 learning about them from the manufacturing process through modelling to implementation<\/em> \u2013 reminds Assoc. Prof. Dariusz Perkowski, DSc, PhD, Eng from the Department of Mechanics and Applied Informatics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Bialystok University of Technology, organiser of the LIMACON conference. \u2013 <em>Our spectacular successes include Formula Student race cars built by Cerber Motorsport and, for example, bridges made from natural materials. In construction, our students not only design and build, but also test their skills in practice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Experts see student involvement as the future of the industry:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>As a cluster representative, I believe this really is the future of the composite industry, because young people working in these associations gain extraordinary experience that can later be directly applied in industry<\/em> \u2013 comments Andrzej Czulak.<\/p>\n<p>A special aspect of the conference is the expansion of Bialystok University of Technology\u2019s international cooperation with partners from Lithuania. LIMACON was accompanied by the 30th Mechanics 2026 conference, organised jointly with Kaunas University of Technology in a hybrid formula.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <em>The third LIMACON is a conference on lightweight materials, composite materials, and the circular economy<\/em> \u2013 sums up Prof. Perkowski. \u2013 <em>Our partners include the Podlaskie Voivodeship and the clusters: Polish Composite Technology Cluster, Evoluma Cluster, and Polish Construction Cluster.
