On 1-3 March 2023, the Faculty of Architecture at Bialystok University of Technology will host the first International Scientific Conference entitled “Digital Architecture Research DARe”. The event will provide an opportunity to reflect on the phenomenon of the progressive digitalisation of architecture. Will digital designs replace drawings made with a characteristic line? Do graphic programmes that support designer’s work have an impact on the aesthetics of the resulting objects?

Digitisation has entered all areas related to architecture – from basic sketching, to design processes, to investor communication, and also to the teaching methods we offer our students. We want to look at this phenomenon and, in an international group of specialists and researchers, assess how architecture’s dependence on digital media affects its development, – says Adam Jakimowicz, PhD, Eng, Arch, Vice-Dean for Development and Cooperation at the Faculty of Architecture.

The Faculty of Architecture at Bialystok University of Technology is one of the leading research centres in Poland dealing with the application of modern digital media in architectural design and architecture. It is here that the country’s unique AuReLa (Augmented Reality Laboratory) Hybrid Architectural Design Environment was created, which allows you to create virtual architectural objects in the existing urban fabric and explore their relationships, as well as visit digital exhibition and museum spaces. The Faculty of Architecture also hosts East Design Days, the largest meeting in north-eastern Poland that unites architects, urban planners, designers, investors and local government officials in debates about beauty, space, contexts, functions and design technologies.

The aim of the DARe conference is to create the first international scientific event in the field of digital media in architecture in Poland. The conference has an open format – the debates of the invited researchers can be listened to by anyone interested.

Speakers and invited guests will include representatives of academic centres from Poland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Great Britain, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece and Austria.

Keynote speakers at the DARe conference are recognised experts in the field of digital design support:

  • Assoc. Prof. Anetta Kępczyńska-Walczak, DSc, PhD, Arch. (Lodz University of Technology),
  • Henri Achten, PhD, Arch. (Czech Technical University, Prague, Czech Republic),
  • Wolfgang Dokonal, PhD, Arch. (Graz University of Technology, Graz, Austria).

The DARe conference is supported by:

  • Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the programme Social Responsibility of Science – ‘Excellent Science’
  • Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange – scholarships for foreign doctoral students, under the PROM programme

The technology partner for the event is WSC – Witold Szymanik and Company.
