Cerber Motorsport team’s new CMS-08 racing car is off to Formula SAE Italy!

13-07-2022
Bolid CMS-08

It’s going to be a very intense season for the CMS-08 car team! As many as five competition series and 7 weeks away from home await them. Today, the Cerber Motorsport team from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will show what they are capable of in the Formula SAE Italy competition. The competition on the Italian race track will last until Sunday 17 July. Fingers crossed for our team!

Our new CMS-08 racing car has been successfully tested on the Bialystok racetrack, but how will it perform during the Formula Student competition? Let’s hope the technology favours it and paves the way for a place on the podium.

– After the first tests with the new car, I immediately felt the difference. The ergonomics of the driver’s seat have changed, allowing me to better control the steering wheel, and the display keeps me informed of all the car’s parameters. Thanks to this, I know what is going on with the car and I can adjust to what is happening at the moment – explains Patryk Siekaniec, the driver and also one of the coordinators of the Cerber Motorsport Team.

– Our students have applied technologies from outer space here. So we have composite technologies, all sorts of solutions which improve safety, aerodynamics – says Assoc. Prof. Jarosław Szusta, DSc, PhD, Eng, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs of Bialystok University of Technology.

Our students have been taking part in international Formula Student competitions since the first car was constructed. In 2016, Team Cerber Motorsport was the first Polish team to stand on the podium of the Formula SAE Italy competition. There is an opportunity to repeat the success of six years ago. For today, Bialystok University of Technology team is competing on the Italian race track, which will last until 17 July.

The rivalry between university engineering teams organised every year on the largest and most famous race tracks in the world is a great event not only for the Cerber Motorsport team, but also for the entire University.

– The Formula Student competition is a rivalry between a group of students who build an incredibly technologically advanced structure. The passion, commitment, ideas, experience of senior colleagues is what makes it possible for us to compete in such prestigious competitions as the five events ahead of us: Italy, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary. This is really the top shelf when it comes to competition between teams from all over the country, from all over Europe – emphasises Assoc. Prof. Łukasz Derpeński, DSc, PhD, Eng, Deputy Dean for Development and Cooperation at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Bialystok University of Technology.

During the 2022 season, the team of students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will compete in 5 series of competitions on the following dates:

  • Formula SAE Italy 13.07-17.07.2022
  • Formula Student Czech Republic 18.07-24.07.2022
  • Formula Student Austria 24.07-28.07.2022
  • Formula Student EAST 08.08-12.08.2022
  • Formula Student Germany 15.08-21.08.2022.,

It is worth emphasising is that this competition is not only a celebration of automotive enthusiasts, but also a ticket to a professional career. The event is watched closely by headhunters, who “fish” for talented students for giants such as: Ferrari, Porsche or Audi.

During the competition, a panel of judges assesses the performance of the cars, but also engineering skills, teamwork and even economic aspects. How the car drives is verified in the dynamic competition, but static competitions also count, which take into account the cost and business planning of the entire team.

We are convinced that the new CMS-08 car and participation in the competition will be the ticket for our team to an equally racing career in the automotive industry!

It’s worth remembering that students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering worked together on the CMS-08 car.

Technical specifications of the CMS-08:

– weight: 215 kg
– Honda CBR 600 RR engine – adapted to the design project
– acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h – 3.8 sec.
– top speed – 125 km/h
– 57 Nm of torque at 8900 RPM
– 82 horsepower at 9200 RPM
– sequential gearbox
– 158.7 kg of downforce at 100 km/h

Solutions used:

– fully adjustable multi-link suspension allowing full adjustment to changing track conditions,
– hybrid superstructure – combining a steel spaceframe with a composite “monocoque” for increased rigidity,
– laminated safety rim,
– display responsible for displaying and storing the most important operating parameters,
– telemetry equipped with 33 sensors,
– engine cover to reduce drag,
– active cooling of the engine area,
– proprietary camshafts,
– modified engine block, which enabled the use of an improved engine sump,
– more efficient and lighter cooling system,
– limited-slip differential with preload control,
– drag reduction system (DRS).

The authorities of the City of Bialystok support student travel to competitions outside Poland.

Subsidised by the Minister of Science and Higher Education with funds from the state budget as part of the programme ” Studenckie koła naukowe tworzą innowacje “.

The Cerber Motorsport team, operating within the Student Auto-Moto-Club at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Bialystok University of Technology. The organisation was established in November 2011 by 17 students, passionate about cars. Over the years, more than 200 people have worked on eight generations of CMS cars. Today, the team consists of 31 people and is divided into 6 sub-teams: Aerodynamics, Electronics, Suspension, Engine and Propulsion, Superstructure, Marketing. The main objective of the Student Club is to win the top position in the prestigious international Formula Student competitions. They are held annually in more than 15 countries, with more than 800 teams, which is almost 31,000 members. Students design and build a car that competes against teams from all over the world. Winning the competition is not only determined by the speed of the car, construction, financial and sales planning are equally important. The competition is divided into static and more spectacular dynamic competitions. Judges are mainly constructors closely associated with the automotive industry.
As the first Polish team, Cerber Motorsport podiumed at the Formula SAE Italy competition in 2016. This competition also brought second places in the competitions: Acceleration, Endurance and Skidpad. The following years also saw a series of successes. One of the most important goals of the Student Club is to create an ever better car and to introduce innovative solutions to improve its performance, which translates into winning places. Combining theory with practice, and at the same time having fun and competing are synonymous with the Cerber Motorsport Team.
