Independence of universities was the main topic of the annual conference organised by the European University Association (EUA) between 6 and 7 April 2017 in Bergen, Norway. The BUT Rector, Prof. Lech Dzienis, represented our University both at the conference and the EUA general assembly.

The European University Association (EUA) brings together over 850 higher education institutions from 47 countries, providing them with a forum for cooperation and exchanging information about policies on higher education and research. 39 Polish universities – members of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, since 2002 including also Bialystok University of Technology – are represented in the Association. Prof. Lech Dzienis, BUT Rector, participates in the work of an advisory body, the EUA Research Policy Working Group.

The Bergen conference was devoted to the issues of university autonomy and academic freedom in the light of the current social, political and economic challenges in Europe. The event was accompanied by the Leadership Roundtable session during which issues concerning the position of European universities as well as some related challenges were discussed. Rectors and representatives of the EUA member universities took part in this debate.
