Nearly 10 thousand students, 7 Faculties, and over 1 400 scientific workers, teachers, and administrative staff – this is Bialystok University of Technology in its 67th year of functioning.

On 1 December every year, BUT students and employees celebrate the University Day. The date commemorates the establishment of the Private Evening Engineering College which later became Bialystok University of Technology, on 1 December 1949.

At this year’s ceremony, Prof. Lech Dzienis, Rector of Bialystok University of Technology, remembered the most important events in the year 2016, e.g. successes of our scientists and students, anniversaries of the Faculty of Architecture as well as the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and also awarding degrees of BUT Honorary Professors.

During the Bialystok University of Technology Day, postdoctoral and doctoral degrees are also conferred. Within the last 12 months, the Faculty Boards of our University had conferred the degree of doctor habilitated on 6 scientists – 4 employees of Bialystok University of Technology and 2 employees of other universities. Moreover, the Faculty Boards had awarded the degree of PhD in technical sciences to 12 scientists: 5 of them defended their dissertations before the Board of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering , 4 – before the Board of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2 – before the Board of the Faculty of Computer Science, and 1 – before the Board of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The newly nominated scientists received diplomas from the Rector and the Deans, and took their oaths.

On behalf of the academic community, the Rector of Bialystok University of Technology congratulated Prof. Valery Salauyou who had been granted the scientific title of Full Professor by the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in September.

Congratulations were also given to those employees of Bialystok University of Technology who had received the degree of doctor habilitated or PhD from other Polish scientific institutions. Our University has 6 more employees with postdoctoral degrees and 3 employees with doctoral degrees now.

The University Day was also an opportunity to present distinctions awarded by the Ministry of National Education and by our University – Gold and Silver Crosses of Merit; Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals for Long Service; Medals of the Commission of National Education, and badges ‘For Merits to Bialystok University of Technology’. Special thanks were given to the voluntary workers engaged in the Children’s University of Bialystok project at our University.

On this special day, we also said goodbye to the former BUT employees who had retired within the last 12 months.

The names of the best students and doctoral students were also announced.

During the ceremony, the Professor Mikolaj Buslowicz Competition Award was given for the first time. Professor Buslowicz was an outstanding scientist, a long-time employee of our University, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and a Vice-Rector of Bialystok University of Technology.

The Award is given for outstanding scientific achievement, e.g. a monograph, publication in Polish or foreign scientific journals, PhD dissertation, or an outstanding MSc thesis in the fields of: Automatic Control and Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or Electronics. The first Award went to Krzysztof Rogowski, PhD, Eng, and Rafal Grodzki, PhD, Eng.

The Alumni Association of Bialystok University of Technology granted their Golden Alumnus distinctions. The Golden Alumni were: Prof. Czeslaw Miedzialowski (a scientist from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering) in the category of science, Jan Zadykowicz, Eng (representing the Jazon firm) in the category of manager, Wojciech Nowicki, MSc, Eng (the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist in the hammer throw) in the category of art, sport, and other achievements, and Artur Luniewski, PhD, Eng (from the Astwa company) in the category of young engineer.

The General Board of the Polish Society of Mechanical Engineers and Technicians (SIMP) awarded a Medal on the 90th Anniversary of SIPM to Prof. Lech Dzienis. The medal was handed over to the BUT Rector by the President of the Board of the SIMP Division in Bialystok, Jaroslaw Ickiewicz, PhD, Eng.

A great attraction of the gala was a concert of the Choir of Bialystok University of Technology.
